Contest Rules and Procedures

All subscribers at the Lite level and above are eligible to compete in the SoundShot Music Contests. These contests are ongoing, year-round, and can be joined at any time. There are three divisions to compete in: grades 3-8, grades 9-12, and college. Grades are determined based on what grade you are in on September 1st of each school year. Here's how it works:

1a. Subscribe at any level above Basic. It is recommended that you compete at the Standard subscription level in order to be eligible to win in all prize categories (Lite subscribers are only eligible for monthly prizes and Lite+ subscribers are only eligible for monthly and season prizes).

1b. Within 24 hours after you subscribe, you will be emailed a registration form to the email address associated with your subscription payment. In order to verify your grade, you must provide the name and school email address of your current band director or music teacher on the registration form.

1c. After you submit your registration form, your band director or music teacher will receive an email requesting them to verify your grade. The status of your grade confirmation will be visible on the point standings page. You are not eligible to receive prizes until your grade has been verified. If your grade has not been verified within 10 days after the contest deadline, you will not receive a prize for that contest period. Unless we hear from you, it will be assumed that you have graduated to the next grade every September. By default, all contestants' grade levels will be adjusted on September 1st of each year. Deception and/or dishonesty will not be permitted and will result in disqualification without a refund.

2. Check this page for the current competition solo of the month in your division. On the first day of each month a different short solo from Chad Floyd Publications will be posted as the competition piece. Solos will vary each month (snare drum, marimba, timpani, and drum set will be the main instruments). If you don't already own the competition solo you will be emailed the piece on the first day of the month as one of your two free solos.

3. Practice the solo!

4a. Record yourself performing the solo. The video must be one continuous, unedited file. The video camera or phone must be positioned so that the performer and instrument is clearly visible in the video from the front. The performer must announce their full name (first and last) before playing.

4b. Upload the solo to YouTube (an unlisted link is fine if you wish for it be private). Submit the link as part of the Video Submission Form before the competition deadline - the last day of each month at 11:59 pm Eastern Time in the United States. Solos will not be accepted past the deadline for scoring and feedback. Only one performance video may be sent per performer each month. Deception and/or dishonesty will not be permitted and will result in disqualification without a refund.

5. Solos will be scored and feedback will be emailed to contestants within ten days after the the deadline each month. Lite+ members will receive concise written feedback while Standard and Premium members will receive detailed feedback along with a snapshot of their scoring in each musical category. A link to the current point standings can be found on this page.

6. Monthly prizes will be awarded within 10 days after the contest deadline each month to the contestants with the highest scores for that particular month in each division. The prizes are $100 for 1st place, $50 for 2nd place, and $25 for 3rd place. Prizes will be sent via PayPal to the subscriber.

7. As you continue to submit solos each month, your score from each performance will be added to the previous month's score which will be used to determine the season prizes and grand prizes. The three competition seasons are: Spring Season (January through April), Summer Season (May through August), and Fall Season (September through December). So, for example, if you score a 98 in May, 95 in June, 90 in July and 100 in August, your total score for the summer season would be a 383 out of 400. Season prizes will be awarded within ten days after each season to the contestants with the highest scores for that particular season in each division. The prizes are $150 for 1st place, $75 for 2nd place, and $35 for 3rd place. Prize money will be sent securely via PayPal to the subscriber.

8. Grand prizes will be awarded within ten days after each school year (September 1st through August 31st) to the contestants with the highest cumulative scores in each division. The grand prizes are $1,000 for the college division, $500 for grades 9-12 division, and $250 for grades 3-8 division. Prizes will be sent securely via PayPal to the subscriber. The first full academic year will begin September 1st, 2024 and the first grand prize will be awarded within ten days after August 31st, 2025.
